Jenova Chen, grundaren bakom indie-jätten Thatgamecompany som står bakom supersuccéer som Flower och Journey, uttalade sig nyligen angående "social gaming" och spelvärldens halvskeva syn på hela begreppet. Under Games for Change Festival talade Chen öppet och ocensurerat om hur han ser på spel som är tänkt att bidra till ökat sociala förmågor och har som uppgift att erbjuda spelaren en upplevelse som skapar känslomässiga utbyten mellan olika spelare.
Enligt Chen är spel som Farmville och World of Warcraft inga titlar som under några som helst omständigheter bör kallas för "social games" eftersom de inte får spelaren att känna något. Han övergick sedan till att prata om hur Thatgamecomnpany valde att skapa Journey för att hitta det där magiska sättet att föra människor samman och bidra till känslomässiga band mellan gamers och spelet i sig.
"Existing games are about killing each other or killing something together. The idea of social emotion means people need to share feelings. At that moment, the players are in sync. The problem [with many games] is there's no chance to share emotion. Most of them are busy, there are explosions everywhere. So we got rid of all the background noise and we had to get rid of the guns. Social means emotional exchange, not number exchange. World of Warcraft and Call of Duty tend to focus on killing things. Thats not very social".
