Ett av de mest kritiserade spelen på länge är Maxis och EA:s Sim City, som med sina krånglande servrar och ständiga onlinekrav förargat spelare. Nu har en källa till Rock Paper Shotgun, som sägs jobba på Maxis, berättat att man teoretiskt sett inte behöver vara online för att spela spelet.
"The servers are not handling any of the computation done to simulate the city you are playing. They are still acting as servers, doing some amount of computation to route messages of various types between both players and cities. As well, they're doing cloud storage of save games, interfacing with Origin, and all of that."
"But for the game itself? No, they're not doing anything. I have no idea why they're claiming otherwise. It's possible that Bradshaw misunderstood or was misinformed, but otherwise I'm clueless."
Så vad används då servrarna till, förutom onlinefunktioner? Enligt Rock Paper Shotgun är de där för att kontrollera att spelare inte fuskar eller hackar spelet. Kontrollerna görs dock inte i realtid, vilket förklarar varför vissa lyckats spela Sim City offline under korta perioder.
