Mångfald har varit ett dominerande begrepp i Hollywood under de senaste åren. Att inkludera ett brett spektrum av människor med varierat ursprung, kön, sexualitet och andra demografiska skillnader (med det anmärkningsvärda undantaget socioekonomisk klass) har blivit en självklarhet för många kulturproducenter.
Detta märks även i den kommande HBO-serien House of the Dragon, en slags prolog till Game of Thrones-serien. I en intervju hos Entertainment Weekly säger showrunnern Ryan Condal att mångfald varit en viktig fråga för honom och hans kollega Miguel Sapochnik när de skapat den nya serien:
"The world is very different now than it was 10 years ago when [Game of Thrones] all started. It's different than 20 years ago when Peter Jackson made The Lord of the Rings. These types of stories need to be more inclusive than they traditionally have been. It was very important for Miguel and I (sic) to create a show that was not another bunch of white people on the screen, just to put it very bluntly."
Det nya fokuset återspeglas bland annat i det faktum att det sjöfartande huset Velaryon inte är vitt, som i böckerna, utan svart. Enligt Ryan Condal kommer idén från George R.R. Martin själv, mannen bakom novellerna bakom Games of Thrones och den kommande spinoff-serien.
"Long, long ago when he was conceiving of this world, [Martin] himself had considered the idea of making Velaryons a race of Black people with silver hair that essentially came from the other side of the ocean and conquered Westeros. That's a fascinating idea and that always really stuck with me because it's such a stark image. I just thought, 'Well, why couldn't we do a version of that now?'"
I en annan intervju med Entertainment Weekly avslöjas det också att House of the Dragon kommer att innehålla flera starka kvinnliga karaktärer.
House of the Dragon har premiär på HBO Max den 21 augusti.
