Även om Steve Jobs ofta ses som den mest kända personen förknippad med Apple, är Tim Cook den självklara tvåan efter att ha varit företagets vd i 15 år. Han tog över efter Jobs och har hjälpt teknikjätten att växa till ett av världens största bolag.
Efter en mycket framgångsrik tid på posten ska Cook nu kliva åt sidan som vd. I stället går han vidare till rollen som styrelseordförande (executive chairman), vilket öppnar upp för en ny vd att ta över. Den som tar över ansvaret blir John Ternus, som tidigare varit senior vice president för hårdvaruutveckling inom företaget.
Övergången sker först den 1 september, vilket innebär att Cook leder verksamheten under resten av våren och sommaren innan Ternus tar över inför hösten och framåt. Apple beskriver i ett pressmeddelande skiftet som resultatet av en "thoughtful, long-term succession planning process", och om att avsluta denna fas av sin karriär säger Cook själv:
"It has been the greatest privilege of my life to be the CEO of Apple and to have been trusted to lead such an extraordinary company. I love Apple with all of my being, and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with a team of such ingenious, innovative, creative, and deeply caring people who have been unwavering in their dedication to enriching the lives of our customers and creating the best products and services in the world."
Cook kommenterade även Ternus tillträde:
"John Ternus has the mind of an engineer, the soul of an innovator, and the heart to lead with integrity and with honor. He is a visionary whose contributions to Apple over 25 years are already too numerous to count, and he is without question the right person to lead Apple into the future. I could not be more confident in his abilities and his character, and I look forward to working closely with him on this transition and in my new role as executive chairman."
Ternus blir Apples åttonde vd sedan företaget grundades på 1970-talet.
