Det är hela åtta år sedan Kingdom Hearts II släpptes och först till nästa generation kommer Kingdom Hearts. Men denna tredje del är absolut inte någon avslutande del i en trilogi, enligt Tetsuya Nomura som istället slår fast i Los Angeles Times att det kommer bli fler spel i serien:
"In Kingdom Hearts III, the battles that the characters have been fighting for the past ten years will come to a conclusion. That is the plan. But the series will continue. Only the particular enemy they have been fighting the past ten years will come to an end."
