Som de flesta redan vet ligger Retro Studios bakom den suveräna spelserien Metroid Prime. Det senaste spelet de utvecklade var Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze som släpptes till Wii U för två år sedan. Liam Robertson från Unseen64 har under en podcastsändning berättat att han har fått lite information från en insider hos Nintendo att Retro Studios för närvarande arbetar stenhårt på ett nytt projekt. Utvecklingen ska ha pågått sedan Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze blev färdigt.
"I don't actually know what the project is, exactly, but I know that it is something that Retro themselves pitched. ... They came off of Tropical Freeze in very late 2013, I think it was, and they continued throughout 2014 pitching new projects. ... And then they eventually pitched a project that went through, and NCL greenlit, and I assume that's what they're doing now—by all accounts, it is."
Robertson tror inte att det rör sig om någon ny del ur Metroid Prime-serien. Om det nu skulle vara ett nytt Metroid så tror han det blir ett spel i 2D, ungefär likvärdigt med det vi fick se Team Ninja göra med Metroid: Other M.
"I don't think Retro wants to do [{Metroid Prime} 4]. ... I'd be surprised if Retro themselves pitched [that]. I think they've had their fill of Metroid. ... And if it is Metroid, then it will be something different—like maybe a 2D one, or something—different from Prime."
Det enda Retro Studios tidigare har skapat är två spelserier som redan funnits till Nintendo sedan tidigt 90-tal. Robertson tror därför att det rör sig om någon helt ny spelserie och att Retro Studios har kapacitet att skapa något riktigt bra, bara dem får lite större ansvar.
"I think, actually, the time is now for Retro to do an original property. They've done two established Nintendo franchises (Metroid and Donkey Kong) and I think now is the time to let them take hold of the reins a bit more for themselves and do that."
