Lite drygt en vecka återstår innan komikern Taika Waititi (Hunt for the Wilderpeople, What We Do in the Shadows) släpper lös nya Thor 3 (Ragnarok) på biografer runt om i världen och det verkar sannerligen handla om en färgstark, rolig och bombastisk actionrulle proppad med karaktär och god komik, åtminstone om vi ska tro på de amerikanska kritikerna som redan hunnit glutta på rullen.

Like a cosmic fever dream, Ragnarok is a disorientating cocktail of riotous colour and batty antics that seem almost unreal after the fact. Try to fit it into an established mould at your peril, but roll with this and you'll discover not only a top-tier addition to the MCU, but one of the most flat-out enjoyable comedies of the year.

Ragnarok isn't impervious to the monotony that has seeped into recent MCU instalments, where the studio's winning mixture of action, laughs and superhero pizzazz have started to feel rote. But Waititi has fun tampering with the formula, casting Jeff Goldblum to exude maximum off-kilter oddness as Sakaar's cruel ruler. And the director taps cinematographer Javier Aguirresarobe and production designers Dan Hennah and Ra Vincent to dream up a vivid colour palette and occasionally surreal visual aesthetic that highlights the material's science fiction and videogame qualities. Like any self-respecting superhero movie, Ragnarok exudes an epic grandeur, leading to a stirring, euphoric finale that doesn't sacrifice scope or gravitas despite all the wisecracks Waititi and company make along the way.

Thor: Ragnarok isn't what could be called the most substantial adventure in the Marvel canon, but it unequivocally is one of the most entertaining. It's a sequel that takes a hard look at its series' past and separates wheat from chaff, and produces a wonderful road movie with some brilliant character work as a result. It's not the groundbreaker that some of its franchise cousins are, but you'll be challenged to find a blockbuster more fun this season.

Thor: Ragnarok is by far the most unusual of the Marvel movies, a crazy, colorful, ambitious, hilarious ride through the cosmos, even surpassing the Guardians of the Galaxy movies as the former holder of that title. And it's by far the funniest. It's not even a question that Thor: Ragnarok is the best of the Thor movies and it's certainly up there as far as the best in the MCU.

And it is also worth noting that the quirks of Thor: Ragnarok may not be for everyone. There are no sacred cows in Waititi's movie, and fans who prefer their superheroes straight-faced and without meta-commentary might chafe at its irreverence. But the willingness to play with genre tropes is one of the most exciting things about Thor: Ragnarok.

It's carried by the excellent chemistry between Thor, Hulk, and Valkyrie, who give humanity to a visual effects-heavy spectacle that finally makes good on Thor's title of God of Thunder. But it's also a film fragmented by its clear preference for its B storyline (Sakaar) over its A storyline (Asgard). Thor: Ragnarok's desire to go for the gag also hurts the movie in a few key serious moments that deserved to pack more punch than they did.

All good things must come to an end, and in Marvel movies, the end always looks the same. Thor: Ragnarok zips along through its middle section before receding to a dramatic showdown where massive things catch fire and huge armies of people clash in an epic battle, which by now has become an essential ritual. Yet even as Thor: Ragnarok sags into familiarity, it does so begrudgingly, and veers off in another idiosyncratic direction moments later.

There's a lot more to the bloated story, but honestly, none of it is very interesting. In fact, it's endless. You don't care what's happening or what's going to happen next. We're just led from place to place for a hash of foggy reasons that no one will ever remember 10 minutes after leaving the theater. But that's not really the point of this movie. Ragnarok is basically a Joke Delivery System, and on that score, it works. The movie is fun. So to recap: Taika Waititi was mostly the right director for the job. Chris Hemsworth is hilarious. Tessa Thompson is going to be a star.
