Sedan 1998 har det dock varit en tradition att låta utvalda internationella speljournalister (från bland annat Rolling Stone och Los Angeles Times) bestämma vad som var bäst under årets mässa i vad som kallas Game Critics Awards.
Om man ska säga något om årets E3 är det att Nintendo verkar ha fallit de flesta på läppen. De tar sammanlagt hem fem kategorier, varav en är den tyngsta av dem alla (Bäst på E3 2006) och även ett pris för bästa hårdvara med Wii.
Bästa spel är Will Wrights Spore som tog hem hela tre kategorier (bland annat bästa originalidé) och näst bästa spel på mässan var Gears of War som plockade hem två kategorier (bland annat bästa konsolspel).
