Det var inte bara Joaquin Phoenix som hyllades för sin insats när den efterlängtade Joker-filmen premiärvisades i Venedig - filmen i sig blev tydligen hyllad till skyarna av de lyckosamma filmkritikerna som befann sig på plats och här nedan kan du se några av de ivriga reaktionerna och recensionerna som började dyka upp under helgens gång. Så här uttryckte sig exempelvis Fandango-skribenten på Twitter:

Här är ett utdrag från Indiewire-kritikern David Ehrlichs recension, som menar att serietidningsfilmen är lika djärv som den kan vara potentiellt "toxic":
Todd Phillips' "Joker" is unquestionably the boldest reinvention of "superhero" cinema since "The Dark Knight"; a true original that's sure to be remembered as one of the most transgressive studio blockbusters of the 21st Century. It's also a toxic rallying cry for self-pitying incels, and a hyper-familiar origin story so indebted to "Taxi Driver" and "The King of Comedy" that Martin Scorsese probably deserves an executive producer credit.
The Guardian-kritikern Xan Brooks - som gav filmen fem av fem stjärnor - kallade filmen "vågad och explosiv":
Having brazenly plundered the films of Scorsese, Phillips fashions stolen ingredients into something new, so that what began as a gleeful cosplay session turns progressively more dangerous - and somehow more relevant, too. Gotham City is aflame and they're rioting on the streets. And a rough beast is slouching towards the TV studio to be born.
David Rooney från Hollywood Reporter menar att det är insatsen från Phoenix som är filmens verkliga drivkraft:
Not to discredit the imaginative vision of the writer-director, his co-scripter and invaluable tech and design teams, but Phoenix is the prime force that makes Joker such a distinctively edgy entry in the Hollywood comics industrial complex.
Stephanie ZacharekAug från Time var dock inte lika förtjust i filmen, som i sin recension skrev:
Phoenix is acting so hard you can feel the desperation throbbing in his veins. He leaves you wanting to start him a GoFundMe, so he won't have to pour so much sweat into his job again. But the aggressive terribleness of his performance isn't completely his fault.
Empire-skribenten Terri White gav däremot filmen fullpott och uppskattade det faktum att filmen inte levererade några enkla svar:
It's a sad, chaotic, slow-burn study of someone who isn't visible; who doesn't even exist to the world around them. But your empathy, sympathy even, isn't guaranteed, and it begins to dissolve as Arthur somehow moves even further to the edges. This is, we mustn't forget, the story of how a villain was made.
Även Jonna Vanhatalo från svenska Moviezine gav filmen högsta betyg, som inte höll tillbaka applåderna i sin recension:
Det här är en filmupplevelse så otroligt mäktig att varje superlativ jag kommer på känns lamt i jämförelse. Jag är helt golvad, för detta är på riktigt bland det häftigaste jag någonsin sett. Det här mina vänner, är film när film är som bäst.
