Den senaste i raden av superhjältefilmer från Marvel och Disney har fått genomlida ett regelrätt stålbad på biograferna, publiken sviker och bolaget står nu inför en unik situation. För The Marvels ser ut att bli deras första MCU-film som misslyckas med att passera 100 miljoner dollar i biljettintäkter på den inhemska marknaden.
Detta har resulterat i en del nya reflektioner från Disney-bossen Bob Iger som nu kommenterat på floppen och erkänt till media att de helt enkelt gjort allt för många uppföljare. Men kritiken stannar inte bara där, han fortsatte även med att förklara att The Marvels blivit lidande av bristande kontroll och tillsyn under inspelning.
″'The Marvels' was shot during Covid. There wasn't as much supervision on the set, so to speak, where we have executives that are really looking over what's being done day after day after day."
"I'm not sure another studio will ever achieve some of the numbers that we achieved, I mean, we got to the point where if a film didn't do a billion dollars in global box office, we were disappointed. That's an unbelievably high standard and I think we have to get more realistic."
"I don't want to apologize for making sequels. Some of them have done extraordinarily well and they've been good films, too. I think you there has to be a reason to make them, you have to have a good story. And often the story doesn't hold up to is not as strong as the original story. That can be a problem."
Iger nämnde dock att detta inte innebär att de på något sätt kommer att sluta producera uppföljare. Men, att det enbart kommer att göras hädanefter om det är en historia som är värd att förtäljas.
"It doesn't mean we're not going to continue to make them. We're making a number of them now right as a matter of fact. But we will only greenlight a sequel if we believe the story that the creators want to tell is worth telling."
