Brigid Kemmerer: "Defy the Night vore perfekt som film"

Under vår vistelse i Asturien i Spanien, där vi besökte Celsius 232-festivalen, fick vi möjligheten att prata med många av världens främsta samtida författare. Ett exempel är Brigid Kemmerer, som kanske främst är känd för sin fantasyserie som inleds med Defy the Night, en berättelse som hämtar inspiration från både sagor och verkligheten.

I en intervju med Kemmerer, som du kan se nedan med svensk textning, frågade vi henne var hon fick idén till Defy the Night. Inspirationen är minst sagt både intressant och betydelsefull.

"Part of my inspiration for Defy the Night was the healthcare crisis in the United States. And I really spent a lot of time thinking about what are the obligations that rulers have to the people? What are the obligations that people have to each other? How can we help each other in different ways? And I really tried to explore that because it is a very complicated issue, especially in the United States right now."

Vi frågade även om hennes kärlek till sagor och varför hon ständigt återvänder till fantastiska världar inspirerade av dessa klassiska och tidlösa berättelser.

"Sometimes. You know, I've always loved fairy tales. I think there is something about fairy tales that speaks to all of us, whether it's the internal lesson or just the familiarity of the story. So I think there will always be a little element of something fairy tale-like in all of my stories. But I do love creating my own worlds and my own characters."

Avslutningsvis frågade vi Kemmerer om hon skulle vilja se något av sina verk filmatiseras eller bli TV-serie och, om så var fallet, vilket projekt hon skulle välja. Svaret var tydligt: "Probably Defy the Night. I hear about that one a lot." Men kommer det någonsin att hända? Kemmerer svarade bara kryptiskt att "...maybe. I hope so."
