Trots att The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt ganska tydligt antydde att Ciri en dag skulle kunna ta över huvudrollen i serien, verkade många ändå bli tagna på sängen när det blev officiellt bekräftat under The Game Awards i december.
Reaktionerna lät inte vänta på sig och vissa tog det som vanligt till en nivå som knappast kan beskrivas som konstruktiv. Skådespelaren bakom karaktären har fått ta emot både hot och kränkande kommentarer online, något som tyvärr blivit allt vanligare i spelvärlden. Men hos CD Projekt Red råder det ingen tvekan om att de fattat rätt beslut. Enligt företagets ekonomichef Piotr Nielubowicz var Ciri det självklara valet.
I en intervju hos den polska tidningen Parkiet säger han:
"At the The Game Awards in December, we presented the first trailer, which was created using our own version of Unreal Engine 5. Although it did not show the gameplay itself, it gave players an idea of what they could expect from The Witcher 4. Above all, we wanted to introduce the world to the main character of the game. We believe that Ciri is a great choice for the new saga because she gives us many possibilities - both narrative and artistic. It also gives us the opportunity to tell the story from a new perspective."
Ciri som ny huvudperson innebär en tydlig förnyelse för The Witcher-serien, och öppnar för att berättandet ska kunna ta nya vägar - både tematisk och spelmässigt. Än så länge har vi inte fått något releasedatum, men enligt journalisten Jason Schreier kommer det som tidigast år 2027.
Geralt får vila, nu tar Ciri över.
