Alla har vi sett 2016 års adaption av DC-serien Suicide Squad där en gråtmild Will Smith lajvar Deadshot medan Gangzta-Jokern ränner runt med guldtänder och ansiktstatueringar. Det blev ingen bra film, det där. Ingen verkar gilla den och Ayers eventuella framtid hemma hos Warner grusades rätt ordentligt när hans film sågades sönder och samman av en enig presskår samt miljontals fans. Det har dock visat sig att Ayer gjorde en helt annan film, men blev överkörd riktigt ordentligt av sina producenter samt filmbolaget som filmade om en tredjedel utan Ayers vetskap, ändrade storyn och lät en trailerstudio klippa om rubbet. Något som Training Day/End of Watch-skaparen inte verkar kunna smälta även om det passerat sju år sedan dess. I en nygjord podcast-intervju pratar han lite mer om hur det gick till och det låter rätt brutalt.
What is your biggest heartbreak in the film industry?
- Hollywood, I tell people, is like watching someone you love get fucked by someone you hate. The big one is Suicide Squad. That shit broke me. That handed me my ass.
How so?
- Come right off Fury, right? I had the town in my hand, could've done fuckin anything, and I did do anything. And, you know, go on this journey with it. And the same thing, authentic, truthful, let's do all the rehearsal, let's really get in each other's souls. Let's create this amazing, collaborative thing, right? And then... Deadpool opened, right? And they never tested Batman v. Superman, so they put the movie out there, and they never did a test, and they were expecting a different result, and then they got hammered by all the critics. Then it's like, 'Okay, we're going to turn David Ayer's dark, soulful movie into a fucking comedy now.'
