Disney+ avslutar BBC-samarbetet kring Doctor Who

Det har varit tuffa år för Doctor Who, som är den pågående science fiction-serien som gått långst tid - med närmare 40 säsonger sedan starten på tidigt 1960-tal. Men den verkar ha tappat i popularitet och är inte lika ikonisk som förr - något som nu gör att Disney+ avslutar sitt samarbete med BBC kring serien.

I ett uttalande bekräftas att vi inte längre ska förvänta oss att streaming-jätten ska vara med och producera eller distribuera Doctor Who globalt. Beslutet påverkar såklart oss i Sverige, men hindrar inte BBC från att fortsätta producera serien och sända den för den brittiska publiken (samt för andra länder som har någon som plockar upp rättigheterna).

Vi får dock vänta ett bra tag innan Doctor Who återvänder, eftersom serien härnäst ska få ett julspecialavsnitt 2026, skrivet av långvarige showrunnern Russell T Davies. Vad som händer därefter återstår att se, men BBC säger sig vara "fully committed to the show and will announce plans for the next series in due course".

Fram till julspecialen 2026 kan vi se fram emot avsnittet The War Between the Land and Sea, som ska sändas på BBC One och iPlayer senare i år (det är ännu oklart hur distributionen ser ut internationellt), samt en animerad serie riktad till yngre barn. BBC:s dramachef Lindsay Salt kommenterade förändringarna och säger:

"We'd like to thank Disney+ for being terrific global partners and collaborators over the past two seasons, and for the upcoming The War Between the Land and the Sea. The BBC remains fully committed to Doctor Who, which continues to be one of our most loved dramas, and we are delighted that Russell T Davies has agreed to write us another spectacular Christmas special for 2026. We can assure fans, the Doctor is not going anywhere, and we will be announcing plans for the next series in due course which will ensure the TARDIS remains at the heart of the BBC."
