Efter Morbius, Madame Web och Kraven så pensionerar Sony sitt Spider-Man-skurkuniversum

Det verkar som att Sonys kritiserade Spider-Man-spinoffs till slut går i graven. Efter flera kritiker- och publikfiaskon som Morbius, Madame Web, Kraven the Hunter och andra verkar Sony-chefen Tom Rothman ha övergett idén om ett filmuniversum som existerar vid sidan av MCU:s Spider-Man, men utan att Spider-Man själv faktiskt dyker upp.

I en intervju hos Variety fick Rothman frågan om Sonys övriga Marvel-karaktärer utanför Spider-Man. Om filmernas misslyckanden säger han att allt handlar om hur publiken reagerade:

"Ultimately, the audience wasn't satisfied enough with them. Whether that's a fair assessment of those movies, who knows. That's howling into the wind. The audience is the boss, and they didn't respond. It's as simple as that."

På frågan om Sonys Marvel-universum kan återvända någon gång svarade Rothman:

"Right now, we don't know. We never looked at it as the 'Sony-Marvel Universe.' We looked at if there were worthwhile movies to make with other characters. At the moment, there are none in active development."

De enorma framgångarna för Spider-Man: Brand New Day på biograferna kan förstås inspirera Sony att återvända till Spider-Mans större filmvärld, men just nu finns alltså inga sådana projekt under utveckling. Publiken verkar helt enkelt ha visat att den inte vill se en Spider-Man-film utan Spider-Man. Undantaget tycks vara Venom.
