Det finns många tänkbara förklaringar till varför spelbranschen befinner sig i sin nuvarande situation. Kanske ersätts vissa jobb av AI, kanske har de allmänna marknadsförhållandena försämrats på grund av makroekonomiska faktorer, eller så handlar det om något helt annat - och sannolikt fler än en faktor. Vid flera tillfällen har vissa ekonomiska experter pekat på covid-19 och menat att alldeles för mycket pengar investerades i spelindustrin under den perioden.
Den tidigare Playstation-chefen Shuhei Yoshida tycks hålla med om detta och säger i en intervju hos WhatCulture:
"The shutdowns and layoffs and the cancellations are the result of these adjustments from the misjudgment that many companies made. I think it was super optimism of the time during Covid-19. The industry grew so much because [people] had to stay at home, and video games were the easiest and cheaper way to be entertained. So they saw this huge increase in growth of the industry, and many investors poured money into the sector, so these publishers over-hired, over-invested. They hired too many people. They invested in projects that they shouldn't have."
Som sagt är förklaringen sannolikt en kombination av flera faktorer, men frågan kvarstår om en betydande del faktiskt kan spåras hela vägen tillbaka till covid-19, vad tror du?
