När Jokern visades upp på Venedigs filmfestival blev det stående ovationer och belönades med dess finaste pris, Guldlejonet. Alla kritiker var dock inte riktigt lika taggade på att DC-skurken får en egen film, där filmen har fått mycket motstånd för att vara potentiellt "farlig" och som kan trigga igång copycat-beteende på grund av sin porträttering. Efter flera masskjutningar i USA - såsom biografskjutningen i en Colorado-biograf - har påminnelsen av ensamma masskjutare varit känslig, men samtidigt är ensamvargar som inte passar in i samhällets ramar och utför våldsdåd inte så konstigt i filmvärlden.
När regissören Todd Phillips fick en chans att tycka till om saken i en intervju med AP Entertainment ansåg han att filmen inte är ute efter att glorifiera våld och som ju trots allt är fiktion:
"This is not the thing that the movie is trying to represent. This is not the, you know, the movie still takes place in a fictional world. It can have real world implications, opinions, but it's a fictional character in a fictional world that's been around for 80 years"
Han kommenterade också att det finns en viss dubbelstandard när det kommer till diskussionerna om "toxic white male":
"You know the one that bugs me more is the toxic, white male thing, when you go, 'I don't know, I just saw John Wick 3. He's a white male. He just killed 300 people, and everybody's laughing and hooting and hollering.' Why does this movie get held to different standards? I don't know, it just doesn't make sense to me."
I en intervju med The Wrap kommenterade Phillips att han enbart var ute efter att göra en "verklig film" och inget annat:
"We didn't make the movie to push buttons. I literally described to Joaquin at one point in those three months as like, 'Look at this as a way to sneak a real movie in the studio system under the guise of a comic book film'. It wasn't, 'We want to glorify this behavior.' It was literally like 'Let's make a real movie with a real budget and we'll call it f-ing Joker'. That's what it was."
Phillips förvånas mest av kontroversen och menar att folk mest väntar på att bli upprörda över någonting så fort det passar dem:
"I think it's because outrage is a commodity, I think it's something that has been a commodity for a while. What's outstanding to me in this discourse in this movie is how easily the far left can sound like the far right when it suits their agenda. It's really been eye opening for me."
