Fortnite har som bekant visat sig vara rejält beroendeframkallande för en yngre generation spelare, och många har fastnat. Nu rapporterar CBC att en juristfirma i Montreal förberett sig för att stämma Epic på grunda av just hur det är skapat för att vara beroendeframkallande. Effekten jämförs med kokain för barn mellan 10-15 år när det kommer till hur det frigör dopamin i hjärnan. Calex Légal-advokaten Alessandra Esposito Chartrand säger:
"We dug into it and we realised there was a strong case for it."
Chartrand nämner ett fall från 2015 där det slogs fast att tobaksföretagen inte varnade för farorna och säger att detta är "same legal basis", i synnerhet när det gäller "duty to inform". Hon fortsätter:
"Epic Games, when they created Fortnite, for years and years, hired psychologists — they really dug into the human brain and they really made the effort to make it as addictive as possible. They knowingly put on the market a very, very addictive game which was also geared toward youth.
In our case, the two parents that came forward and told, 'If we knew it was so addictive it would ruin our child's life, we would never have let them start playing Fortnite or we would have monitored it a lot more closely'."
