Efter det dramatiska avskedandet av James Gunn har Disney fortfarande inte hittat någon regissör som kan ersätta honom. För några veckor sedan bubblade dock rykten upp till ytan som hävdade att Steve Knight, som snart är aktuell med den fristående filmen om Bumblebee, att han skulle regisserade Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Dessa rykten visar sig dock inte stämma, vilket Knight bekräftade i en intervju med Bad Taste.
"After Bumblebee, my goal is to return to work at the animation studios Laika, my 'child' bringing with me all the baggage of experiences I have gained with this project. I'm a huge fan of what Marvel did, it's no surprise for anyone to know that as a child I was a huge fan of comics. But no, it's just a rumor!"
