"The ever growing virtual photography crowd relishes intricately rendered modern day 3D gaming environments, especially when they can be freely explored using a unlocked camera, allowing for stunningly framed imagery that is hard or impossible to appreciate during normal gameplay. Quite a while ago, when I first got engrossed in this engaging pastime, I noticed, and shortly after started amassing, shots by others that incidentally or intentionally used free camera techniques to shed the third dimension, thereby resembling 2D sidescroller games.

Many games since the early seventies have used this form of graphical projection during gameplay, which has come to be known by a variety of names, such as 2.5D, pseudo-3D, three-quarter perspective, or simulated 3D. This gallery celebrates the attempts by screenshotters to transform fully rendered and explorable 3D game environments into dimensionally restricted but esthetically pleasing pockets of gaming bliss. A big thank you to everyone who has either submitted or allowed inclusion of their shots in this weird celebration of the joy of gaming.
