Regal Cinemas bannlyser Universal

Som vi skrev tidigare idag så har världens största biografkedja AMC blivit rejält tjuriga mot Universal och deras beslut att hädanefter släppa sina nya filmer på både video-on-demand och i biografer samtidigt. Ett beslut som fick till effekt att AMC med omedelbar verkan svartlistade Universal och vägrar visa fler filmer från filmbolaget i sina biosalonger runt om i världen, något som då även innefattar svenska Filmstaden.

Nu får AMC stöd av Cineworld som är ägaren av Regal biograferna och även de låter meddela att de inte tänker visa en enda Universal film på sina dukar under rådande omständigheter. Med mer än 500 biografer runt om i USA är Regal den näst största kedjan i landet efter AMC. I ett öppet meddelande meddelade biografkedjan följande:

"Cineworld's policy with respect to the window is clear, well known in the industry and is part of our commercial deal with our movie suppliers," the company said. "We invest heavily in our cinemas across the globe and this allows the movie studios to provide customers all around the world to watch the movies in the best experience. There is no argument that the big screen is the best way to watch a movie. Universal unilaterally chose to break our understanding and did so at the height of the Covid-19 crisis when our business is closed, more than 35,000 employees are at home and when we do not yet have a clear date for the reopening of our cinemas."

Vidare skrev de:

"Cineworld's roots go back 90 years in the industry and it was always open to showing any movie as long as the rules were kept and not changed by one sided moves," the company said. "Today we make it clear again that we will not be showing movies that fail to respect the windows as it does not make any economic sense for us. We have full confidence in the industry's current business model. No one should forget that the theatrical side of this industry generated an all-time record income of $42 billion last year and the movie distributors' share of this was about $20 billion."

Det är tydligt att situationen nu eskalerar snabbt och frågan är ifall vi får se fler biografer följa i AMC och Cineworlds fotsteg i kriget om biobesökarnas pengar. Och den ännu större frågan är om fler filmstudios kommer lägga sin styrka och sitt stöd bakom Universal. Spänningen är olidlig och detta kan absolut komma att forma VoD och biolandskapet baserat på det slutliga resultatet. Vilka har rätt och vilka har fel i denna fråga. Diskutera gärna!
