Fallout 76, Bethesda onlinefokuserade rollspel som kommer till PC, Xbox One och Playstation 4 den 11 november, är något av en föregångare till tidigare delar i serien eftersom det kronologiskt utspelas innan dem. Faktum är att du i Fallout 76 kliver ut i den totalförstörda världen bara 25 år efter katastrofen. Men är det verkligen säkert med all strålning? Vad kan man äta och går vattnet att dricka?
Dessa frågor besvarar professor Paddy Regan, expert på kärnfysik i en intervju där han utgår från att scenariot vore verkligt - även fast han aldrig spelat dessa spel själv:
"The amount of radiation that happens immediately is not insignificant. But most of the radioactive material becomes not radioactive pretty soon after that nuclear weapon has been exploded. The half-life for most of the stuff that comes out of fission fragments is much shorter than years. After about ten or 15 days, you've got a limited amount of different radioactive isotopes that are present. And after 30 years there are only two that are actually of significant strength.
What kills people is the infrastructure that's wiped out. No communication, no access to food or running water, sewage, cholera. Same as an earthquake."
Angående vad man kan äta, så tycker professorn att den konserverade mat man ofta hittar låter som ett sunt alternativ:
"Getting radioactive material inside your body is generally not good for your health. Stuff in tin cans I think would be ok - what you'd be more worried about is eating bits of meat, or cows that had been grazing on the fields in the three or six months after the attack happened."
Nu är vi alltså rejält förberedda på alla utmaningar som slungas mot oss i Fallout 76, även om vi önskar att professorn kunde berättat mer om hur man tampas med radioaktiva mutantbestar och hanterar andra spelares kärnvapen.
