"I was given the opportunity to be responsible for the production of hair for Horizon Zero Dawn. As the sole artist working with this, my responsibilites and daily tasks included but were not limited to:
• Work with my collegues at code, rigging and shading to implement our own version of TressFX for Aloy. As this system had only been used for high-end PC games before, we had to overcome a series of technical difficulties to have approximately 50 fully dynamic splines drive a game mesh of 100k tris at 3-5ms at 30fps on a PS4.
• Establish workflows and pipelines in the creation of hair for main characters and NPCs with a wide variety of modularity/lodding/aesthetic solutions depending on importance and performance budgets.
• Educate outsourcing vendors in the creation of hair and provide both live feedback sessions to studios over skype and daily feedback towards artists involved.
• Work with respective departments to create a hair shader that would support our forward/deffered game engine with efficient lodding.
• Create hair assets (such as hair for the main heroine Aloy, Aloy child-version, story characters and at least one asset per type of hair archetype) and provide these to outsourcing vendors as benchmarks."
